You remind me that the English word "salary" is from the salt given to Roman soldiers in payment for a day's work.

I've heard this story! I wanted to include it in this poem, but then I also read that the salt - salary association could also be a mistranslation? Since I wasn't sure, I left it out. But true or not, it's another cool example of the complex histories and stories surrounding everyday things!
